Press Release Body = Advanced Flat Glass industry forecasts to 2010 & 2015
New product development to benefit US demand for flat glass products
Demand for advanced flat glass will benefit primarily from the development and commercialization of a wide variety of innovative new products. These products, such as smart glass, self cleaning glass and heads-up display windscreens, are all in the early stages of the product life cycle. Nevertheless, US demand for advanced flat glass reached nearly $6 billion in 2005, and is growing at a very rapid pace.
Architectural markets to exhibit strongest growth
Motor vehicles represent the largest individual market for advanced flat glass, incorporating a wide variety of products, including tempered and laminated window glass, heads-up display windscreens, electrochromic mirrors, smart glass and self-cleaning glass. Although less than half the size of the motor vehicle market, the architectural market will post much stronger gains, benefitting from the development of self-cleaning and smart glass products, as well as growing use of laminated hurricane glass in certain parts of the country.
Applications for laminated, ballistic glass to make inroads against tempered glass in motor vehicles
Overall demand for advanced flat glass is dominated by automotive safety glass, including both tempered and laminated products. Although tempered glass has
historically accounted for most of the glass used in motor vehicles, laminated products are increasingly making inroads, as they improve safety against ejection in roll-over accidents and provide better protection against break-ins and carjackings. Laminated glass is increasingly being utilized in other applications as well, including architectural markets (as a replacement for tempered fire glass, as burglary-resistant glass and as hurricane glass). Ballistic glass, for both architectural and motor vehicle applications, is also recording strong growth, reflecting concerns about both crime and possible terrorist attacks.
Study coverage
Advanced Flat Glass, a new Freedonia industry study, is available for $4200. The study examines the $5.7 billion US market, presenting historical data (1995, 2000 and 2005) plus forecasts to 2010 and 2015 by product, including safety and security glass (safety glass, fire glass, ballistic glass, burglary resistant glass and hurricane glass); solar control glass (low-emissivity, reflective and smart glass products); and other advanced flat glass products (heads-up display windscreens, ultraclear and colorless glass, self-cleaning glass and other products). Consumption is also provided by market (architectural, motor vehicles, aerospace, appliances and furniture, electronics and miscellaneous markets). In addition, the study evaluates company market share and profiles 31 US industry competitors.
